How Do You Feel About Getting Married?

How Do You Feel About Getting Married? by Dijon is one of my favorite EPs and this project was my interpretation of it. The EP feels organic, warm, romantic and almost minimal in terms of its production. I reflect this through the use of collage, subtle shadows and utilization of white space. The imagery of lilacs, rice and a Pontiac are pulled from some of Dijon’s lyrics. Fun detail: the license plate on the Pontiac is from Maryland — where Dijon is from.

How can I reflect the feeling of Dijon’s music into a visual?

Process

Prior to this project, I was working on collage experiments and tried to branch out from using strictly paper materials. I decided that this type of work would compliment the texture and DIY feeling that Dijon’s music exudes. I then listened to the EP and pulled out some key words from the lyrics that might be used for the imagery of the cover. I also took note of the style and feeling of the songs.

From there, I sketched some thumbnails for possible front and back covers. I went forward with three of these and created more developed compositions. I printed out lilacs, Pontiacs, grabbed uncooked rice, and arranged them on 12x12 inch pieces of paper. I utilized an analogous color palette of blue, purple and pink, which lends itself to the romantic and tender feeling of the EP.
